Did you know your pet’s coat is a good indicator of their health? While regular grooming is vital for a healthy coat and skin, a combination of that and these other (not so obvious) tips will help your furry friend look their best.
1. Feed your pet a high-quality diet
You’ve probably noticed that when you eat well, you can see the effect it has on your hair, skin and nails. The same is true for your pet! Feed your furry friend the best quality diet your budget can stretch to and their skin and coat will reap the nutritional benefits.
2. Bathe and brush
When it comes to bathing, make sure you’re choosing the correct shampoo for your pet. Like an anti-tangle shampoo for long-haired breeds, a neutral PH balanced shampoo for pets with sensitive skin, or a white wash shampoo for canines with white fur. Depending on the thickness and texture of your pet’s coat, they may also need more or less frequent baths and brushes to keep their skin and fur as healthy as possible.
Most felines are meticulously clean (and probably wouldn’t appreciate a shampoo!). However, many adore a good brush – particularly long-haired breeds who need regular brushing to keep their coat healthy and tangle-free. A shedding comb such as the FURminator will be perfect for them.
3. Add supplements
Look for supplements which contain essential fatty acids and vitamin B, which will give your pet’s coat strength and shine. Vitamin supplements and oils should be used in addition to a complete pet food.
4. Watch out for allergies
Food allergies caused by dairy, grains and particular types of meat are common in pets, so look out for signs such as itchy skin and upset stomachs after eating. If you think your pet might be suffering from an allergy, consider trying a hypoallergenic food for dogs or cats to see if this relieves the symptoms.
